IP-backed lending addressed by Inngot CEO at major Indian conference
4 Dec 2019
The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) recently invited Martin Brassell, co-founder and CEO of innovative UK intellectual property valuation specialists Inngot, to deliver a presentation on IP-backed lending at a prestigious international conference in New Delhi.
The event, the 5th International Conference on IP Rights: Innovation and IP led Technology for a $5 Trillion Economy, took place in New Delhi on December 3rd and 4th 2019. It was co-hosted by CII, Intellectual Property India and the Indian Government’s Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, and supported by the UK IPO.
Martin’s talk covered what IP-backed lending is, why IP and intangible assets are increasingly important in the 21st century knowledge economy, the challenges and opportunities for companies, lenders, and Governments and why facilitating IP-backed lending would particularly help SMEs.
Martin is a recognised global expert on the use of intellectual property and intangible assets in raising finance for businesses. He recently co-authored an influential report from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Fostering the use of intangibles to strengthen SME access to finance, published in January 2019.
In his address, he presented the ways in which IP value can be leveraged, and commented on progress made in other parts of the world, to an audience of IP professionals, government representatives, academics and business people.
He observed that treating IP as ‘true’ collateral required steps to be taken to address the risk of loss, given the present banking regulatory environment and the uncertainties over how much IP value is likely to be realisable in distress. Martin concluded by presenting an operating model centred on standardised, insurance-backed assessment and monitoring process, which Inngot is currently constructing.
Inngot offers a suite of online tools to help innovative businesses identify, manage and value intellectual property and intangible assets. In addition to its IP valuation tools, Inngot contributes to the international debate on how best to help SMEs in particular uncover and leverage the value locked up in their IP and intangible assets and offers bespoke IP valuation and technology valuation services.
In addition to the recent OECD report, Martin Brassell has also co-authored Economic Approaches to Intellectual Property, with Dr Nicola Searle (OUP, 2016), and reports and publications for the UK’s Intellectual Property Office (IPO) and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), amongst others.
