WIPO Coordination Committee Nominates Singapore’s Daren Tang for Second Term as Director General

Daren Tang, current Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), has been nominated for a second six-year term in office by the organisation’s Coordination Committee, after it met on February 12, 2026.
The WIPO General Assembly, the Paris Union Assembly and the Berne Union Assembly will meet in an extraordinary session on April 21, 2026, to confirm the Coordination Committee’s nomination.
The process of electing a Director General is governed by the Convention Establishing the World Intellectual Property Organisation and the procedures governing the nomination and appointment of Directors General of WIPO.
The Coordination Committee comprises representatives from 83 member states. There was one other candidate, the other being Johanny Stanley Joseph from the Republic of Haiti.
Daren Tang, whose current term ends on September 30, 2026, received 81 votes in the first round.
Before joining WIPO, Mr. Tang was the Chief Executive of the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore.
