The World Intellectual Property Organisation has launched a new guide for SMEs, advising them on how best to leverage their IP and intangible assets to secure bank lending through IP-backed finance.

The pdf guide, Securing Loans with Your IP Assets is part of the WIPO Hands-on IP Finance series. It outlines how IP can support debt financing, prepares users for discussions with lenders, and provides insights into the lending process. Additionally, the guide addresses post-loan procedures. Throughout, practical checklists and templates equip businesses and IP owners to maximize the value of their intangible assets and facilitate favourable financing terms.

The official launch webinar saw more than 300 virtual attendees hear Marco Aleman, Assistant Director General, IP and Innovation Ecosystems Sector, WIPO, introduce the guide.

Lally Rementilla, Managing Partner, IP-Backed Financing at Canada’s BDC Capital (the Business Development Bank of Canada), then shared her experience from an investor's perspective on how to successfully access IP finance in a keynote speech.

This was followed by a panel discussion involving leading IP finance experts, including Srividya Gopal, Managing Director & Southeast Asia Valuation Leader, Kroll (formerly Duff & Phelps), Singapore; Martin Brassell, CEO of Inngot, UK; Prof. Chul Choi, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, South Korea; and Gabriela Contreras, Corporate Legal & Compliance Manager at Luminova Pharma Group in Guatemala, who provided useful tips for creators, innovators, IP owners and businesses to raise capital using their IP assets.

Inngot’s Martin Brassell was heavily involved in the preparation of the new guide.

The guide can be downloaded for free from WIPO here: https://www.wipo.int/publications/en/details.jsp?id=4768
