IP commercialisation experts Inngot has partnered with the Advanced Propulsion Centre UK (APC) Technology Developer Accelerator Programme (TDAP) as a business mentor for the past eight years. During that time, Inngot has delivered IP monetisation advice as well as educating start-ups and SMEs on protecting and strategically managing their intellectual property and related intangible assets. Over the eight cohorts, Inngot has worked with over 100 companies.

About the Advanced Propulsion Centre UK

The Advanced Propulsion Centre UK (APC) collaborates with UK government, the automotive industry and academia to accelerate the industrialisation of technologies that support the transition to zero-emission vehicles and towards a net-zero automotive supply chain in the UK.

Established in 2013, the APC, with the backing of the UK Government’s Department for Business and Trade (DBT), has facilitated funding for 304 low-carbon and zero-emission projects involving 538 partners. Working with companies of all sizes, this funding has helped to create or safeguard over 59,000 jobs in the UK. The technologies and products that result from these projects are projected to save over 425 million tonnes of CO2.

With deep sector expertise and cutting-edge knowledge of new propulsion technologies, the APC’s role in building and advising project consortia helps projects start more quickly and deliver increased value, accelerating new technologies to market. The APC works to drive innovation and encourage collaboration, building the foundations for a successful and sustainable UK automotive industry.

The Technology Developer Accelerator Programme (TDAP), delivered by the APC and backed by the Department for Business and Trade, has supported early-stage, clean mobility businesses for nearly a decade. An award-winning accelerator programme, the eighth cohort of participants was announced in September 2024. 14 innovative UK automotive sector companies are being backed with a total investment of over £3 million, including over £2.3 million in government grant funding.

Following participation in the programme, alumni report acceleration of route-to-market by an average of 16 months and have attracted over £340 million of private investment, at the same time increasing headcount by on average 50%.

In January 2025, the APC and Zenzic, a sister organisation of the Advanced Propulsion Centre UK focusing on the acceleration of the self-driving revolution in the UK, joined forces to offer a combined early-stage accelerator programme called Mobilise, focused on delivering zero-emission and smart, connected mobility solutions for the future.

Mobilise offers a unique blend of grant funding, mentoring, and networking opportunities within the mobility sector, helping businesses that are developing innovative automotive-related early-stage, zero-emission or Connected and Automated Mobility (CAM) technologies, products, services or solutions to create robust strategies and business models and accelerate their route to market. The programme builds on the award-winning features of the Technology Developer Accelerator Programme (TDAP) and combines them with the technical validation opportunities currently provided by Zenzic’s CAM Scale-Up UK initiative; namely unparalleled access to an extensive network of world-leading Testbed facilities.

About Inngot and how we help support early-stage businesses

Inngot was founded in 2007 by information industry professional Martin Brassell FRSA and international finance law expert Professor Iwan Davies to demystify the connection between intellectual property and intangible assets (IP) and company value, and to help facilitate the use of IP to raise either debt or equity funding.

Inngot’s tools and services solve the twin problems of asset identification and valuation that have made it difficult for companies to harness the value of their IP and intangibles, which are usually not to be found on balance sheets.

As a TDAP mentor, Inngot delivered a Masterclass on IP and intangibles and IP commercialisation. They then helped participants create an ‘inventory’ of all their knowledge assets, as well as an action plan for better managing and protecting their IP.  Inngot’s team then conducted an in-depth one-to-one confidential half-day interview, which resulted in an IP Audit report.

Businesses were given the opportunity to then take advantage of their funding to commission further, more in-depth bespoke services from Inngot, such as IP valuations, IP licensing research, patent landscaping, IP management and strategy, and staff training.

Inngot does not draft patent or trademark applications, which means that its advice is independent and complementary to that provided by existing professional advisers, such as patent and trademark attorneys.

Mark Boland - Company Secretary

“We always did say we understood our only asset was our IP – we knew from the beginning we were at least five years from having a product. What Ian [Inngot’s Dr Ian Goodyer] did for us was to make us realise what that really meant.“

“The audit helped us clarify the fact that we needed to be looking at all aspects of our IP, not just our core technology and patents. For example, following the audit, we have registered a number of additional trademarks.”

“It also helped us identify technology that was novel and so could be protected through patents, and technology that could be protected as trade secrets. When you are developing tech like this, you can undervalue some of the ideas you come up with because you think the steps you’re going through are obvious. So the audit helped us benchmark what is novel and of real value.”

Catalsys also commissioned a bespoke IP valuation from Inngot. Kevin says: “It was particularly good. It wasn’t just a ‘one shot and done’ approach; it was an iterative process involving a number of rounds involving clarification and explanation which helped come up with what I felt was an accurate figure.”

Gaussion

“One key thing Inngot taught us was to take control of the patent prosecution ourselves. That came about because Inngot’s research identified some problems involving key communications between the EPO and UCL’s patent lawyers. Inngot advised us to make sure that Gaussion were in control of the patent prosecution process.”

Overall, Dr Heenan says, the Inngot report was “very comprehensive and well thought-out, especially given the time and resource constraints of the project duration! In terms of the content and quality, it was brilliant. I definitely recommend Inngot.”

“Inngot's suite of online tools are very useful if you’re starting a business and trying to evaluate your IP. I don’t know any other company that provides a service like this and I would recommend it. It definitely helped bring our attention to certain parts of our IP and intangible portfolio.”
